Country Music: The Encyclopedia represents the third edition covering the field assembled by Irwin Stambler and Grelun Landon. The 1983 edition was named a Reference Book of the Year by the Library Journal, which also presented a favorable review of the latest version. As a vice president with a major music publishing company, Grelun Landon worked with many of the top stars of the Grand Ole Opry and later served as president of the Country Music Foundation (which operates the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville). For many years he handled promotional activities for Elvis Presley (whose gold Cadillac with Elvis’ initial gold records mounted on its interior walls was stored for several years in Landon’s garage before being placed on exhibition at the Nashville Hall of Fame).
In a review, Al Riess of Dirty Linen (August/September ’98), notes: "Country Music: The Encyclopedia is a very interesting, informative, and entertaining book that can be used as a reference source or just for browsing. The substantial entries are written in a relaxed, conversational style and contain a mix of biographical background material on the people covered, highlights of their careers, and information on songs and albums they recorded."
